95% of drops in a game make absolutely no sense at all
I've gotten a Beastmaster's Harness of Beastmastery before. I also am always amused at armor with runes that completely do not match the creature that dropped it.
Crafting material drops also tend to amuse me...are we tearing apart their clothing/armor or skinning them or whatever after we kill them?
Sadly I have not gotten any rogue sapphires or rubies, though

As far as some of the comments earlier regarding sapphires, I was doing Cantha Courier Crisis for survivor, and my first run today, my first drop from the Am Fah was a sapphire.
I love the hard mode version of this quest, the drops are great.

I'd like to say I got a Skeleton Shield from a Blessed Snowman in the dungeon Secret Lair of the Snowmen.

Ahahaha, one of the first sentences I learned in Latin. You're not Belgian by any chance? :P
And as for weird drops: do UW scrolls in FoW count?

Well, in terms of unexpected (but known) drops, the most memorable for me was the Black Dye off the level 1 mantid in Sunqua Vale. It was like my 5th or 6th kill in the entire game... and it was back when Black Dyes were worth like 10k. It funded my first character for a good long time, that dye did.
I'm always amused by the salvage drops where the monster is, say, a Ranger, the insignia is for like an Assassin, and the rune is for maybe a Monk. Poor bugger obviously didn't understand how armor upgrades work... Same goes for Water Wands of Fire Magic or whatever.
Also, although this kind of makes some sense (and isn't technically a drop)... Ruby/Sapphire/Diamond being salvaged from Ruby/Sapphire/Diamond Djinn Essences. How does that work? Are we condensing the essence into a gem or something? Or was it just a particularly chunky Djinn?

I'm still not convinced that even works, lol. There are reports of gem salvages on the talk page, but the success rate must be abysmal. I've salvaged hundreds (sadface) of djinn essences, always thinking, "This will be the time!" and it never yields anything but dust. Not once.

I believe I got one ONCE. So it is possible. However, I feel like you have a much better chance with Geodes. I've gotten lucky with those several times (but it could have been just that, luck).
IMO it's more just a matter of salvaging them, and hey, if you get one, yay! If not, meh, you lost what, 25g? Getting gems as salvage is just a happy surprise during casual gameplay, not any kind of actual income.
